Weekend in Hvar

After 1 1/2 month in Rijeka we finally managed to visit our families in Split and Hvar. And it was really best thing to do, because after raining Rijeka, sunny Dalmatia was real salvation. Mostly we were in Hvar. Among other, we took a walk through town centre.

HVAR HVAR1 HVAR2

In this time of year there are still no tourists, maybe only few in hotels. This is period of season preparations, houses are painted and decorated. My mother is planting flowers all around the house, she is known for her beautiful flower «jungle» in season time.

HVAR3 HVAR4 HVAR5

My father is turbo working in fields, because they have spent February in Australia, so he doesn’t have a lot of time to plant vegetables this year. Also, in «lemon fields» (few km from Hvar) he is installing self-watering system, great thing especially in summer months.

HVAR BARBECUE HVAR FISCH Ljubica's flower jungle

In the two days on Hvar we mostly eat grilled fish, of course fish caught by my father Open-mouthed– fresh fish is very hard to find in Rijeka, so you can imagine our happiness with the menu. Unfortunately everything that is good lasts short: after two days we had to take ferry to Split and go back to Rijeka.

Holidays in Croatia – St. Nicholas

Two dearest saints to Croatian children are celebrated in December: St. Nicolas (6. 12.) and St. Lucia (13. 12.). Why? They bring sweets. Or at least that’s what our parents told us.

3 days ago St. Nicolas came, brought sweets in to homes and kindergartens. My sister’s son is 2 years old, just started to speak, but he can say St. Nicolas very well. Especially because, in the morning, the sock he had left on the window the evening before, was full with sweets. Since St Nicolas day, I’ve noticed some change in his behaviour he is kissing and hugging me more and listening more to what I say. Now I know why, he learned I Kindergarten about St Nicola. Although he is so small, he understood that St. Nicolas doesn’t give anything to bad kids. I guess he is already preparing for next year.

My sister, by the way told me that she had forgotten about St. Nicolas, so she had to run in market at nine in the evening. That made me laugh, I remember, when I was small, my mother also used to go somewhere late in the evening, day before St. Nicolas. Later I find out there is no St. Nicolas, and understood why in my sock I always could find same chocolates as in my favourite market here on Hvar.

JAGODNA, HIDDEN BAY ON HVAR

Most of my best memories are related to beautiful bay on island of Hvar. It is situated on northern side, 4km from Hvar town.

When I was 4 jears old my parents bought peace of land there, and we were there allmost every weekend. Also today, when I have free time, Jagodna is one of my most wanted destinations. Especialy since they buildt a house there.
Sommer or winter, spring or autumn, it is really unimportant. Peace and quiet is disturbed only by our voices.

My father has small boat and very often we go fishing. There is not much fish in our net, but it’s enough for us. The house is 5m away from sea, it takes few minutes to prepare grill so we are practically eating the most possible fresh sea fish.
Since we in Croatia say: “The fish has to swimm 3 times, in sea, in oil, and in wine”, it is good that there are beds after good homemade wine.

One of the most popular way of spending holiday in Croatia
today is 7 day tour on a wooden boats.

Many members of diving organizations each year dive in Adriatic sea. They travel every day to another island, between Trogir and Dubrovnik, mostly Hvar, Korčula, Vis and Mljet. On a boat like this privacy and peace is guaranteed.

While travelling with boat they have full pension, food is mostly traditional Dalmatian.

Cabins are double or for one person. With them travel only captain and two sailors, so they have practically whole boat only for them self. It is very good way for get rid of every day stress.
