Mediterranean wines

vinograd_mediumIf you want to see Dalmatia, the Mediterranean pearl and have a clear picture of Dalmatian coast, people and habits. I would recommend you should come in late summer (September), at that time a year you will avoid the crow and really have good opportunity to see the real Dalmatia.

At this time of year, the wine-growers are preparing themselves for the vintage, the harvesting of the grapes and for the vine production. They are self supplying in terms of barrels and all other equipments. For the best wines I know they use barrels from oak wood, and these barrel has to be adducted a little from inside, this improves the quality of wine. They leave the wines in the oak barrels for 12- 24 month, which of course makes these wines more expensive, but the result is the very, very nice and popular barrique wine.

zlatan_otokIn the group of the best wines from Dalmatian we can assort Zlatan Plavac barrique ,Zlatan Otok, Ivan Dolac and Faros barrique all produced at the Croatian wine spot Nr1 the south side of island Hvar (Pharos). These are all excellent wines, but also wines from Island Brac are of high quality e.g. the Bolski Plavac from Bol.

There are so many sorts of wine and it is hard to say which one is better, it is depending on your taste, and do you like red or white wine, with stronger taste, young or old wine. There are so many characteristics of wine and I will of course leave that to experts and oenologist who have very hard and responsible task. They are people with experience, healthy eye, sensitive palate, tongue and nose, and they have huge wine knowledge.

All Dalmatian islands: Brac, Hvar (Pharos), Vis (Issa), Korcula (Korkyra Nigra) ,peninsula Peljesac have their own wine treasure.

marina-splitska1For Island Vis (Issa) that is Vugava golden yellow in color and with specific aroma , Dingač baroque red and dry wine from peninsula Peljesac , Pošip from Island Korcula that is majestic white wine , maybe the best from the south Dalmatian, there is also Postup and Grk (like Greek man) from small place Lumbarda at Korcula.

Wine roads are all over Dalmatian and Croatia with specific cellars and taverns around it. It is remarkable experience, come and see, you will enjoy especially if you going by bicycle or walking.

So if you come to Dalmatia in the late summer, you can travel around visiting the vineyards and maybe even help out by the harvesting of the graves and the production of the wine. And of course taste some great wines like would old Romans said „the liquid of life”.
