To Vukovar we drive by bus and it takes around 7-8 hours of driving. We wanted to give some support to local people because of the  terrible experience they go trough during the Balkan War 1991-1995.

Like we say here ;Croatia was born in Vukovar. We visit hospital from where in that time Serbians take all wounded, kids older sick people to torture and death .

Ovčara is the name of that place and before war it was farm. But during the war it was terrible place where uniformed members of the Yugoslav Peoples Army(JNA) and paramilitary Chetnik’s formations who were drunk and out of control, commanded by the JNA officers(M.Mrkšić,V.Šljivančanin,M.Radič) and others, has beaten up prisoners from Vukovar with sticks, baseball bats, chains, rifle stocks, and various other objects. Even the mayor of Vukovar a Serb S.Dokmanović beat up his fellow-citizens.

At Ovčara the victims were mostly wounded people and medical personal from Vukovar hospital .They was all thrown in massive grave. In September 1996, 200 bodies were exhumed from there.

During aggressive attack on Vukovar thru Ovčara farm 3000-5000 people past thru.Today no one is punish for that crime. More about Vukovar battle and war see here. And you can also take a look movie Harrison’s Flowers from 2000 with Andy McDowell and Adrian Brody. Definitely a great movie!

Today in Croatia we all remained our self that we should not forget Vukovar because all people who die for Croatia and because all of them who lose their dearest.Croatia War is bigg tragedy and we should forgive but never forget!!! With those words of friar we left Vukovar. In bus you could touch the sorrow…and hope of better tomorrow.

Beaumont is the name which is sleeping in the heart of every person from Split.

Those who remember Split from some other, nicer and happier times also knows story about Beaumont and his fountain. On the other side almost sixty years ago from the occurrence of white lady from Split called Riva, main promenade. Some old people remember her very good, but we younger, we new her from popular TV series “Velo misto”.

In that time 1860 Antonio Bajamonti was mayor in Split. His most famous work was construction of the big fountain which was named after him. Three months later after putting fountain in use Dr. Beaumont died. The fountain was destroyed in 1947 by communists who have declared fountain as a symbol of fascism domination. However the fountain was very decorative component of Riva where many people come to take a photo. It was one of the biggest and the most representative fountain on the whole coast.

Today urban planners didn’t think so much about tradition and about Diocletian palace, most proberly we will like it in the long term, but for now the general perception is that the Riva is to modern, which does not fit to the 1700 years old Diocletian palace.

They put 34 very massive and gruff light carriers, but that is not only mistake made on Riva, also the flowers doesn’t match in Mediterranean culture, but most important the cafe bars which has long tradition on Riva are not anymore having there tables outside and the once who has, was forced to buy some very expensive modern stile once, which does not fit into the ambient of old Roman palace. So the general feeling among Split citizens is that somebody did bad homework.

After visiting the archaeological museum, we headed on to the ruins of the roman city Salona, which is situated in the suburbs of Split on the way to Trogir.

What few people know is that Salona actually was one of the major cities in the Roman Empire with a peak time population of almost 60.000, which is 3 times as much as e.g. Pompeii had.

Unfortunately lager part of the Salona city has been covered by industrial factories, which mainly was established when Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia republic.

Despite of this the, area which today can be visited is still quite big, so we definitely would recommend you to plan at least half a day for the visit, if you want to see all of it. As you can see on our pictures, bring you own launch is also, not a bad idea. What you definitely should remember is appropriate shoes.

Salona is open whole year to visitors’ and the entrance fee is only 20 Kuna, so if you are close to Split this summer you should plan a visit.

Saturday morning we went with our Australian friends to see the Archaeological museum in Split. Although we have been living here for 3 years we have to admit this was our first visit (-:

Actually the museum is one of the oldest archaeological museums in eastern Europe, dated back to then beginning of the 19th century, The museums is mainly based on founds from Split and Salona, but in total more than 50 archaeological finding areas has supplied the museum with the valuable objects.

The first think which surprised us about the museum, was the beautiful building, we actually passed by hundreds of times by car, not noticing it because large trees along the outside wall. But when you first get inside there is a beautiful garden, and alone the surrounding wall you find an exhibition of large findings mainly from Diocletian’s Palace and the old roman city Salona.

Inside of the building there is exhibition of smaller items, like pottery, glass, coins, and armour, some of it date back to year 10.000 BC.

We spend a couple of hours at the museum, both for adults as well as the kids, there was plenty of inspiration for there imagination, so we definitely would recommend a visit to the Archaeological museum, you can visit the homepage of the museum here to find more information.

Split is the biggest Croatian town at the Adriatic coast. Thanks to high mountains, this area is protected from impact of continental climate. What to see there?
Old heart of Split, Diocletians Palace, It derives between 295-305 ages. Diocletians really name was Gaius Auerlius Valerius Diocletianus.

He was born in poor family and he came along from the common soldier to main commander.During domination he led wars against Persians and Germans, as an emperor he chases Christians. The most known victim was Bishop Saint Duje (he is the patron saint of Split).

Saint Duje was tortured and murdered in the year 304 in city’s amphitheater. Cathedral of Saint Duje and Peristil in front of it are very valuable to see. From them, many authentic streets are leading you to beautiful stone houses and restaurants with Dalmatian food. Trough the centuries, Split celebrate his memorial day which is 7.of May (day of town Split).
That day in Split is big liturgy celebration, and many others celebrations economics, cultures, sports … most of these events are placed on new build Riva, that was made through the centuries. Architectural historians consider it one of the best preserved late Roman villas. From the 1979 Diocletian Palace is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
