Weekend in Zadar

Submitted by on 10. October 2007 – 22:18No Comment

eddies-new-carLast Monday was non working day here in Croatia, weekend was longer, so I went with my husband to visit our good friends in Zadar. We also had one more special reason to travel, my husband wanted to try out our new car. No wonder, since before we had half smaller car, and you know how frustrating that can be.

highwaybridge-by-krkaThe travel lasted 1,5h (a lot shorter than before), but it was not boring for me – the new Croatian highway was build one year ago and until now I didn’t have many chance to see it. The only bad thing was that I couldn’t see almost anything except hills and speedometer rising with the speed of light (at least from my point of view – you should have seen happiness in his eyes). If you go like we did, from Split you’ll first see hills, few kilometers after Šibenik you’ll cross river Krka and than you arrive to lowland – special for Zadar’s area. In Split we are not used on lowland, so all the time I had feeling we are not moving at all.

Nola’s mother and me were going to school together for 8 years, we become „friends for life”. She went to college in Zadar, fell in love and got married there. Today me and my husband are Nola’s godparents. The nicest way to confirm our friendship. So, after lunch, long conversation, laugh and playing with Nola we went to see the town. I saw it many times, as i used to come there while we were on college.

Today we have some nice stories from those days, some of them are our little secrets, of course, my friends live in suburb, and Zadar is pretty long town, so it takes time to come to center. old town of Zadar is 3000 years old, build on peninsula. It is also connected with other parts of town with one bridge, but only people can go over it. It’s great; while we are standing on it we can feel it moving.

Old part of town is really big, walking time 15-20 min from one end to the other, my favourite is the waterfront, which was renovated not long time ago, so today was first time I had to see the new Sea organ they made there, which is unique in whole world. We were lucky, it was sunny day, but still there were small waves and the organ made beautiful music. It felt so relaxing sitting there by the sea, listening to that unusual music and watching sunset over the islands in front of Zadar. And all of that with husband beside – totally romantic… we were sitting there until the sun went down.

Although I grew up eating fish almost every day, I wanted to try how fish tasted in Zadar (if it was same as on Hvar where I come from). I ordered „lignje” (I think it’s squid on English). Man! it tasted fabulous, together with salad and potatoes, on this day I had to forget everything about my diet, so I ordered Banana Split for all of us.

As we in Croatia often say: everything that’s nice, lasts short, we also had to go home. I was sad, but also happy because I realized I don’t need to travel very far away to see something beautiful.
