We left Split Friday morning at 7.40 on the relative long trip back to Denmark, we had decided to drive trough Slovenia and cross the border to Austria by Villach, and head to Salzburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Wurzburg and follow highway A7/E45 from there on. This is how the trip went.

DAY 1:

KM 400 Zagreb Arrival time11.20, after one short coffee stop.

KM 430 Border to Slovenia Arrival time12.00, we passed the border with no waiting time an with out the custom officers checking our trunk (- :

KM 540 Ljubljana Arrival, time13.15. 30 km after Ljubljana we had lunch at a nice restaurant / Brewery next on the part of the road where there is no highway.

KM 616 Border to Austria time15.20, we bough a Vingette at the last Slovenian gas station before the border after “negotiating” a bit with the attended who on German claimed that price for the Vingette was Sieben und Siebzig Euro, which is 77 EURO, what he actually wanted to say was Sieben Euro und Siebzig Cent which is 7.70 Euro.

KM 815 Salzburg / Border to Germany.

KM 885 Arrival Rosenheim time 18.15 we decided to stop here for the night as traffic was getting heavy manly because of fog causing a decreasing visibility.

In Rosenheim we found our selves a nice little hotel in the centre, Hammerwirt (75 Euro for “double room” for all 4 of us), the receptionist told us there was Christmas market in the 2 minutes walk from hotel, so of course we went to see that. The Christmas market was world class, I really reminded us of the years we lived in German.

On day one we paid the following amount in road tax.

Croatia162 Kuna

Slovenia 10.50 Euro

Austria 16.00 Euro

DAG 2:

At 6.50 we left the hotel, in front us we have 1250 km drive, so we wanted to get on the road before traffic started.

KM 960 Munich arrival, time 07.30 and from there on a haft way empty German highway enabled us to go at a comfortable speed.

KM 1.610 Hanover arrivals, time 13.10, last 700 km no problems with traffic and road conditions was excellent.

KM 1.920 Arrival at Danish border , time 16.15 JUBII JUBII now were where almost home, we could almost smell the home cooked food waiting for us (-:

KM 2.165 Finally we arrived HADSUND, time18.20 after 23 hour drive we had finally made to our end destination, our two girls Ida and Caroline on 4 and 7, handled the trip excellently, so know we have to weeks to enjoy Christmas here in Denmark before we head back home to Split. On the way home we will take a slightly different route and of course we will keep you posted about that trip also.

Merry Christmas

My children adore this speciality. ”Fritule” have long tradition preparing in Dalmatian
during Christmas time.Children likes them because they are like little doughnuts.
But they are not doughnuts they are much, much better.
So here is recipe if you want to try it.

You need: 30 g ferment
Little water
1,5 kg flour
rum or brandy
3-4 spoon currant
Scrabble lemon crust,little nutmeg
One hand of chip almonds
1 l oil
vanilla sugar

In little pot you put 30 gram of ferment,
little flour mixed with little heat water and leave
for couple of minutes so dough can arise.

In one big pot put the rest of the flour and in the middle add ferment with little
salt water ,enough you can blend dough with big wooden spoon.Careful with water so you don’t make dough to much attenuate.
Add brandy, currant, nutmeg, chip almonds, lemon crust, and vanilla sugar.
Blend again until you see dough make bubbles. Leave dough for 1 hour
In mean time make warm 1 litre of oil.
With spoon and fingers make small sizes of dough and drop in hot oil.
When fritters come up on surface take them out and sprinkle with grinded sugar.
Advice: everytime you take dough with spoon …take dough with spoon wet of water, It is much easier.
Serve them warm and fresh made.

Will J-DAY come to Croatia?

A few weeks ago I noticed that we could by Tuborg Christmas brew in the shops here in Croatia, so I think I was about time to inform about the tradition connected to this beer in my home country Denmark.

In Denmark we have 2 very important Christmas days, of cause Christmas evening, the second one is the day when Christmas starts the J-DAY!

So what is J-DAY? Here comes the explanation!

In 1981 the famous Danish brewery Tuburg, launched a beer called Tuburg Julebryg (Tuborg Christmas beer) or Sne Plis, (Snow beer), the beer immediately became a great success, every year the hype about the beer increased, so in 1990 Tuborg launched the first J-DAY, (J beeing the first letter in Jul, the Danish word for Christmas) on the second Wednesday in November. On the J-DAY the sale of the Julebryg start in bars all over the country at exactly at 20:59, so you can imagine the croud!

In 1999 Tuborg had to change the J-DAY from Wednesday to Friday simply because of the reason, that to many young people did not show up to school or work, the day after.

Another interesting think about the Tuburg Julebryg (Christmas brew) since the launch back in 1981 the same commercial has been used in Cinemas’ and on TV, so people has a very high association between the Christmas and the Julebryg.

You can see the commercial here, and download a Wallpaper and screensaver which guarantee will bring you into christmas mood.

And when you get really hocked on Julebryg you buy your equipment in the snow shop, what else (-:

Snow equipment for boys

Snow equipment for girls

Anyway the beer actually tasted great, it is a dark beer a little bit stronger then a normal beer, with a very nice taste of Christmas (-:

So everybody in Croatia and other places in the world now you know what J-DAY is!

Holidays in Croatia - where to go?

New year’s day is comming. Since everyone is asking me how will I spend it, I started to think about: What’s the best way to spend holidays?

We just moved to new apartment that we like very much, and my husband agreed to stay at home. I’ll make my own christmas decorations, bake cookies and we’ll be with family. This year it will be traditional holiday. But, somehow, when I told that to our friends, I got the feeling that my idea is not good enough. One even asked me: what are you, an old lady?

That made me really thinking. And so I started making plans again. And found out I’m allmost too late. Oure friends already payed to some bar that is organising party. Other are going to Austria for skiing. Everyone has something organised! Nowone will be at home! I started caling arround to see if there is anything free. Nothing good enough! I was so sad going home, with a feeling of ruining holiday, because staying at home was my proposal.

So, when I came home, I gave my husband travel brochures (the only thing I coul find). He looked at them, and than laught: "My dear wife, what do you think I like more: skiing on cold wetter, or being at home in warm eating and laying on our couch?" Just the answer I needed!

Next time I’ll show you my self made christmas decorations!

Holidays in Croatia – St. Nicholas

Two dearest saints to Croatian children are celebrated in December: St. Nicolas (6. 12.) and St. Lucia (13. 12.). Why? They bring sweets. Or at least that’s what our parents told us.

3 days ago St. Nicolas came, brought sweets in to homes and kindergartens. My sister’s son is 2 years old, just started to speak, but he can say St. Nicolas very well. Especially because, in the morning, the sock he had left on the window the evening before, was full with sweets. Since St Nicolas day, I’ve noticed some change in his behaviour he is kissing and hugging me more and listening more to what I say. Now I know why, he learned I Kindergarten about St Nicola. Although he is so small, he understood that St. Nicolas doesn’t give anything to bad kids. I guess he is already preparing for next year.

My sister, by the way told me that she had forgotten about St. Nicolas, so she had to run in market at nine in the evening. That made me laugh, I remember, when I was small, my mother also used to go somewhere late in the evening, day before St. Nicolas. Later I find out there is no St. Nicolas, and understood why in my sock I always could find same chocolates as in my favourite market here on Hvar.
